EncFS: Hiding things in Linux userland

We're all familiar with OTFE (On The Fly Encryption) systems that create encrypted filesystems where you can place files you normally don't want to be seen. Here's a comparison of OTFEs available. Truecrypt is one of the more popular systems that is both free/opensource and can operate on both Windows and Linux systems.

The advantage of using disk encryption systems like these is quite obvious. It protects your data from offline attacks. With the rise in laptop users (and laptop thefts/losses) this systems provide security to your important data. Multi-user desktops also come into mind.

EncFS is another crypto-system which uses a different approach. It runs in Linux (a Windows port is still buggy) and doesn't need special privileges. It runs on userspace with the aid of FUSE which creates the virtual filesystem that EncFS is based on. One advantage of EncFS from the above OTFE systems is that it is expandable. On usual OTFE systems, you create a fixed-size image/partition which you then fill up with the data you're trying to secure. With EncFS you create a directory where EncFS will use to house your data. Another directory is used as a mountpoint for the data in the first directory. You can list the files inside the base directory but they are stored with randomized filenames.

Linux Documentation Resources

One of the best things why I like Linux over other operating system is the huge amount of documentation one can have if only they take the time to do a little searching and finding on the big'ole internet. While browsing today, I came across this updated site which I bet is familiar with old school linux and unix people. This is an updated and redesigned mirror of The Linux Documentation Project. Much more newbie friendly compared to the main TLDP website that we know of. Lots of great stuff to read and review for you and me. This website is actually a subsite of the Fultus Publishing. Closer inspection of the site gave me more documentation of other stuff like BSD and other Linux distro. Check out the website here .

Flying with FG Flight Simulator

Maybe you're like me then that we have so many dreams when we were young. I've dream of becoming a priest, becoming a teacher and becoming a pilot. Way back 1980's, the Surallah South Cotabato has this small airport called Alla Valley Airport (RPMA)[1]. Our place is just a 15 minute ride going to airport of Surallah. As a kid, I'm really fascinated on the plane and most of the time, the plane is on descent mode when it reaches our place. When I told my playmates(kababata) that I'm dreaming of becoming a pilot, they will just make fun of me. They told me I will end up of becoming a Coconut Pilot - Coconut wine (tuba) gatherer. I took up AB Philos on my first year in college but since my father dont want me to proceed on that course,(he want me to become an elementary teacher), I ended up being a compsci student.

Its a bit surprise to find out that my compsci course will let me fullfill my dream of becoming a pilot. (ehehehehhe) Last year, my brother bought me a MS Flight Simulator and I've been flying then on some of the planes in some of the airport in Mindanao. When I was hooked up with the GNU Linux and the opensourced software, I encountered a good Flight Simulator - Flightgear Flight Simulator.

I’ve tried to compare the terrain and the various landmarks of the place in Mindanao and I’ve found out that FlightGear simulator is more accurate on rendering the scenery compared to MSFS. I have some captured footage of my flight from Malita, Davao Del Sur (RP17)[2] going to the Francisco Bangoy International Airport (RPMD) of Davao City last August 2006.

ClusterSSH

From the FAQ:
What is ClusterSSH and what is it used for?

Ever had to make the same change on more than one unix server?

This tool addresses exactly this problem. You run a utility (cssh) giving a couple of server names as parameters, and then xterms opens up to each server with an extra “console” window. Anything typed into the console is replicated into each server window (so you can edit the same file on N machines at the same time).
